David Edward Stephens
15th April 1939 - 27th March 2010
Dave was the eldest child of Vera and Edward and brother to John and Joey. On leaving school he joined the Royal Navy which later was to become his life.
In 1959 he married Teresa and they had three children, Moira,Tracey and Adam.
He joined the Portsmouth Field Gun Crew where he ran in 1963, 66 and 71. He was a Rigger in 72,80 81 and 82. In 1976 and 79 he was a Buffer.
Dave was well known as being a practical joker who liked nothing more than making people laugh. His best memories were when he served on H.M.S Kent. After leaving the Navy he became a Rigger at the B.B.C then later a pool technician / lifeguard at H.M.S Dryad.
Sadly in 2006 Dave was diagnosed with Progressive Supra-Nuclear palsy which is a neurological disorder. The past 18 months he spent at Church Farm Residential Home in West Witterings . He spent many a time prior to his illness lazing on the Wittering beach!!!! During his time at the Home he was re-united with all his mates and Oppos where they were able to reminisce about times gone by. His family are grateful for their input as the Navy was his life.
Sadly Dave passed away peacefully on 27th March 2010 with his children present.
The funeral was held on his 71st birthday and was a fantastic celebration of his life it was with all his family and friends present.
In one ex field gunners words "YOUR DAD WOULD LOVE A RE-RUN OF THIS!!!!!!!!!"
Dave's ashes are to be scattered on Father's day (20-06-10) at West Wittering as his wishes were to be scattered at sea. At a later date there will be a scattering at the Rose garden Whale Island H.M.S Excellent.
